NCCCO mobile crane operator certification has two parts: written exams and practical exams. On the written side you take the Core exam plus one specialty exam for each crane type you want certified, such as lattice boom, telescopic boom swing cab or telescopic boom fixed cab. Boom Angle covers the written exams. We don't prepare people for the practical, which is done on a crane with an examiner.
Load charts are the biggest single topic
Load charts are about 27% of the Core exam and about 35% of each specialty exam, which uses manufacturers' charts. The skill is reading a chart correctly: gross and net capacity, deductions, which radius applies, and what the chart's notes allow and forbid. Our practice problems use fictional practice charts that are clearly labelled. They are never a manufacturer's chart or one of NCCCO's.
The format in brief
- Core: 95 questions in 90 minutes. No calculator is allowed.
- Each specialty: 28 questions in 60 minutes. A calculator is allowed.
- Where you test: online with a proctor, at a test center, or at a testing event. Results come back immediately.
- Retakes: wait four weeks before retaking the same written exam, unless an alternate form exists.
- The window: once you pass your first exam, you have 12 months to pass the matching written and practical exams for that designation.

How to use Boom Angle
- Take the free diagnostic: 25 questions across the Core domains, with no signup.
- If load charts come out weakest, work through practice charts until each step (radius, configuration, deductions, net capacity) is automatic.
- Practice the Core arithmetic without a calculator.
Every question is original and written to the published NCCCO outline. Questions a certified crane operator has reviewed are marked Reviewed, and the rest are being reviewed in batches. They are never real or recalled exam questions.
